McCarthy must condemn Roy for racist remark: “Find all the rope in Texas and get a tall oak tree”
At the first congressional hearing on anti-Asian discrimination in decades, GOP Congressman Chip Roy (TX-21) disgustingly invoked “old sayings in Texas” that celebrate lynchings.
Yes, you read that right.
Congressman Roy’s racist opening remarks at a hearing on a surge in anti-Asian attacks across America comes just two days after a white supremacist committed a mass shooting that targeted Asian American women and left eight people dead in Atlanta, Georgia. Failing to see any issue with spewing racist rhetoric—let alone at a hearing focusing on combating hate crimes—Roy has since doubled-down on his comments and refused to apologize.
Today, the DCCC is calling on Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to condemn Congressman Roy’s racist comments, and speak out against his caucus’s use of violent rhetoric in our politics.
DCCC Spokesperson Chris Taylor released the following statement:
“Racism has no place in America, let alone within the halls of Congress. The recent surge in attacks against Asian Americans across the country should serve as a sobering reminder that violent rhetoric can and will have serious consequences. Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy must condemn Chip Roy’s racist comments, and House Republicans must do better.”
