House Republicans Again Choose Gun Lobby Over Children

Hundreds of mass shootings. 19 children killed in Uvalde. 10 Black Americans massacred in Buffalo. 3 dead, and nearly a dozen injured in Philadelphia. And countless other acts of senseless gun violence.

These aren’t just numbers – they represent loved ones lost and lives cut short. But these tragedies apparently mean nothing to House Republicans, who just voted against common sense legislation that seeks to address the gun violence epidemic.

In response to the onslaught of mass shootings across the nation, today House Democrats took action and voted to pass the Protecting Our Kids Act, legislation that would:

  • Raise the age to purchase a semi-automatic weapon from 18 to 21;

  • Ban the sale of large capacity magazines;

  • Crack down gun trafficking and straw purchases;

  • Outlaw bump stocks, which effectively turn semiautomatic weapons into machine guns – what was used in the 2017 Las Vegas massacre;

  • Outlaw ghost guns, which lack traceable serial numbers and have increasingly been used in violent crimes;

  • And promote the safe storage of firearms through precautionary measures.

In addition to the broadly popular March 2021 House-passed background check laws, this legislation would address crime, reduce gun violence and reduce the number of mass shootings.

DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“House Republicans would rather cower to the gun lobby than protect our children and communities from senseless acts of gun violence.”
