House Republicans Block Two Commonsense Measures to Make Our Country Safer

House Republicans Vote to Block ‘No Fly, No Buy’ Legislation for 27th Time

In the wake of this weekend’s attacks in New York, New Jersey, and Minnesota, House Republicans’ standardbearer Donald Trump swiftly proved once again that he is utterly reckless and clueless on national security. Not to be outdone by Trump, House Republicans today voted to block two commonsense measures that would help make our country safer by closing a loophole that allows suspected terrorists to purchase guns and bolstering Department of Homeland Security (DHS) programs to prevent terrorists from entering the United States.

Specifically, House Republicans this afternoon blocked an up-or-down vote on:

  • No Fly, No Buy”: a bipartisan bill that would keep guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists. House Republicans have now blocked a vote on this bill 27 times.
  • Expanding DHS Overseas Passenger Security Screening and Vetting Operations Act”: which would enhance critical DHS vetting and screening programs that prevent terrorists and other dangerous people from entering our country. The bill would expand both overseas and domestic operations for vetting and screening travelers, and add 2,000 more customs and border protection officers.

“It’s simple: House Republicans are long on tough talk but short on support for the tough and smart policies that would actually make Americans safer. By supporting Donald Trump and the danger he poses to our national security and blocking two timely, commonsense bills to make our country safer, House Republicans are once again putting their party over country,”
