House Republicans’ Dangerous Default Plan Threatens to Stop Service Members from Getting Paid

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warns a Republican-forced default will hinder ability to pay U.S. troops

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is warning if the U.S. defaults on its debt, “we won’t, in some cases, be able to pay our troops with any degree of predictability.”

Not only are House Republicans threatening catastrophic default to force an extreme MAGA agenda of gutting programs families depend on, but they are willing to stop paying troops unless they can gut veterans’ benefits.

As a reminder, the only reason the threat of default exists is thanks to House Republicans’ plan to hold the U.S. economy hostage in order to force extreme cuts to programs families depend on, funding that is creating American jobs, and veterans’ benefits.

DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“House Republicans are essentially saying ‘cut veterans’ benefits or we’ll stop paying service members.’ If gutting benefits and halting pay is the thanks House Republicans give service members who defend our nation and protect our freedoms, voters will have yet another clear reason to vote them out in 2024.”
