Why is House GOP Leadership urging members to vote “no” on bipartisan effort to learn the truth about January’s fatal insurrection?
Despite admitting that the deadly insurrection on January 6th was a violent “attack on Congress by mob rioters” and that “a fact-finding mission would be prudent,” Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and members of his sedition caucus spent the last week trying to downplay the severity of the attack, in which five people died and hundreds of House staff, U.S. Capitol Police Officers, and Members of Congress had their lives threatened.
Now, as Congress prepares to set up a nonpartisan investigation to learn how it happened, the House GOP effort to block this commission is yet another example that their caucus belongs to conspiracists and extremists who have no problem disrespecting the sacrifice law enforcement makes each day to keep our communities safe. Either Republicans are in denial of what happened on January 6th, or they want to make sure the truth doesn’t see the light of day.
“House Republicans are shamefully urging members to vote against this commission whose sole focus is uncovering the truth about the fatal insurrection that took place earlier this year,” said DCCC Chairman Sean Patrick Maloney. “Their caucus has found common cause with white supremacists and now they want to keep Congress and the American people from learning the truth about what happened. This effort is dangerous, un-American, and even more reason for Congress to set up this commission so we can get to the bottom of how January’s attack really happened.”
As much as Republicans would like to whitewash the events of January 6th and insist it was “a normal tourist visit”, thousands of hours of devastating footage prove the exact opposite. The GOP can’t claim to stand for patriotism or our law enforcement when they are once again abdicating their duties, bowing to Trump’s Big Lie, and turning their backs on our democracy by attempting to cover up the truth.
Let’s not forget, McCarthy sang a different tune in January addressing the insurrection:
- “…the violent mob that descended upon this body was neither peaceful nor democratic. It acted to disrupt Congress’ constitutional responsibility.”
- “Of all the days here, last Wednesday was the worst day I have ever seen in Congress.”
- “Conservatives also know that the only thing that stops mob violence is to meet it with force rooted in justice and backed by moral courage.”
- ”Most Americans want neither inaction nor retribution. They want durable, bipartisan justice.”
