House Republicans Propose Cuts to Social Security, AGAIN

MAGA Republicans propose cuts to limit seniors’ access to their hard-earned benefits

House Republicans are targeting Social Security by proposing massive cuts to the Social Security Administration. The proposed $183 million cut would dramatically reduce seniors’ ability to access their benefits.

According to new reporting from Business Insider:

The Office of Management and Budget found in March that should SSA funding be cut, it could take months longer for benefits to reach Social Security recipients.

These cuts have severe consequences for older Americans who rely on these benefits:

A 2020 GAO report, which looked at fiscal years 2014 through 2018, found that around 48,000 Americans had to file for bankruptcy as they awaited a final decision on their disability appeals. Meanwhile, nearly 110,000 Americans died during the same period before they heard back on a final decision.

This is far from House Republicans’ first assault on these essential benefits this year. In June, the Republican Study Committee detailed their plan to cut  Social Security and privatize Medicare.

This latest assault on Social Security could literally cost lives. House Democrats will continue to work tirelessly to protect Social Security for generations to come.

DCCC Spokesperson Viet Shelton:
“Kevin McCarthy and extreme MAGA Republicans are obsessed with cutting Social Security – something that will have dangerous consequences for our seniors. As long as House Republicans continue to kowtow to the most far-right members of their Conference, they cannot be trusted to protect these lifesaving programs and our seniors will pay the price for their reckless extremism.”
