Today, the House passed the Presidential Election Reform Act in response to MAGA Republicans’ attempts to overturn the 2020 election and the deadly January 6th attack on the US Capitol. The bill strengthens the Electoral Count Act (ECA) by reinforcing that:
-
The vice president doesn’t have the power to reject state’s electoral votes, like House Republicans and MAGA supporters pressured former Vice President Mike Pence to do.
-
Members of Congress should only be able to object to electoral slates in very specific ways, with founded claims.
-
State governors are required by law to submit real, lawful election results. Statewide candidates and even donors funding candidates running for federal office have tried to intervene at the state level to overturn the will of voters and advance fake electors.
-
Laws cannot be changed after the election occurs, preventing lawmakers from altering laws just because they don’t like the results.
REMINDER:
-
139 House Republicans voted to overturn the 2020 election results.
-
Dozens of House Republican candidates in swing districts cast doubt on the 2020 election results and touted the Big Lie.
-
4 candidates backed by the NRCC attended the insurrection or rally leading up to it.
-
All but two House Republicans voted against investigating the attack on the Capitol and events leading up to it.
-
Dozens of candidates continue to campaign alongside Trump, touting his lies, and still refuse to acknowledge the results of the 2020 election.
-
Kevin McCarthy, Tom Emmer, and the NRCC continue to fundraise and look to Trump for advice. Emmer recently called Trump a “fantastic ally.”

DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“This vote is yet another reminder of the active threat that MAGA Republicans pose to democratic elections. They proved they are more than willing to throw out the will of the people if they don’t like the results of an election and they will do so again if given the chance. If they had it their way, we could see violent attacks like January 6th become a regular occurrence in our country.”
