House Republicans Vote to Shut Down Government, Risk Americans’ Health and Pay

Despite major Republican obstruction, Democrats fund government and vital programs

Despite GOP leaders whipping against the resolution, the House passed a continuing resolution to keep the government open, preventing a laundry list of problems for American families.

Had Republicans got their way and the government shut down:

  • Government programs that issue tax refunds and guarantee children are fed would be at risk

  • New applications for Social Security and Medicare would not be processed for America’s seniors

  • FEMA’s ability to respond to emergencies like Hurricane Ian could be hindered

  • And millions of federal employees would be put on unpaid furlough

On top of ensuring our government stays open, the continuing resolution will help Ukraine fight back against Putin’s aggression, address the water crisis in Mississippi and address damage from a wildfire in New Mexico.

“Once again, Republicans are showing the American people they would rather play politics than govern,” said DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia. “Had Democrats not been in charge, families would have faced the brunt of the GOP’s cowardly lack of leadership.”
