Hurd a “NO” on bipartisan DREAM Act, brags about work with Republicans on immigration

Need proof that Congressman Hurd takes his directions from Speaker Paul Ryan and Washington Republicans, not Texans ready for a real fix to our broken immigration system?

Hurd is bragging about being a part of a Republican only working group on immigration, while he refuses to sign onto the bipartisan DREAM Act. For context, that’s the same bill Republican Congressman and Dean of the Texas Delegation, Joe Barton signed on to support this week, with overwhelming support nationwide.

“Congressman Hurd loves to talk about being a bipartisan guy with the ability to reach across the aisle and get things done,” said Cole Leiter, DCCC spokesperson. “But even a cursory glance at his record and where he stands today on protecting DREAMers shows that he’s already become a creature of Washington who marches to Speaker Ryan’s drumbeat. That’s not what folks in West Texas look for in their leaders and pretty soon, Will Hurd’s record is going to catch up with his fast talk.”

By late Tuesday, 174 Democrats and one Republican — Mike Coffman of Colorado — had signed the petition. But the tactic remains a longshot to succeed given apparent GOP resolve to combine a DACA fix with provisions and funding for stiffer border security.

Democrats are pressuring Hurd and other Republicans to add their names to the petition.

Hurd also has drawn criticism for failing to co-sponsor a version of the Dream Act, which is slowly picking up GOP sponsors. U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Arlington, the longest-serving Texan in Congress, added his name to the legislation on Monday.

Javier Gamboa, a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesman, noted that more than 60 percent of Hurd’s San Antonio-area district identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino.

“It’s puzzling that he hasn’t added his name to the Dream Act, especially when he likes to portray himself as a bipartisan guy,” Gamboa said.
