Second-Term Michigan Congressman Paul Mitchell Won’t Seek Reelection
Just a little over six months into Democratic control of the US House of Representatives and already another Republican is headed for the exits, this time it is Rep. Paul Mitchell, who has seen the writing on the wall decided to pack up and head home at the end of his second and final term in Congress.
Just months after winning reelection, Rep. Mitchell vented his frustrations to Politico on why he’s leaving Washington and his GOP colleagues, saying in a not so-subtle jab at President Trump that when:
“You look at the rhetoric and vitriol, it overwhelms policy […] Everything’s about politics. Everything’s about an election. And at some point of time, that’s not why I came here.”
And who can blame him? Life in the minority with no end in sight is no fun and for many Republican incumbents, it just won’t be worth the hassle to try and hang on in 2020 with an unpopular and chaotic president weighing your party down.
Mitchell says he, “came to the decision after spending time at his lake house with his family, and realized he was missing important family time.”
So with August recess and time with family just a week away for the (many) other disgruntled Minority Members, the only remaining question is who is next?
