ICYMI: After Disastrous Amanda Adkins Rollout, KS Republicans Stuck With Two Bad Candidates

Adkins and Sara Hart Weir both saddled with damaging headlines in their race to the bottom

It’s barely been two weeks, but former Brownback advisor Amanda Adkins’ campaign for Congress is already off to a rocky start. Let’s review:

  • First, Adkins filed her candidacy more than a week before her official campaign kickoff, failing to make an argument to voters about why they should excuse her ties to unpopular former Governor Sam Brownback and his disastrous economic agenda.
  • Then, the company Adkins works for laid off hundreds of employees, raising questions about whether Adkins herself is still collecting a paycheck while she runs for office.
  • And yesterday, a new Kansas City Star investigation revealed that Adkins “may have skirted federal election law by representing herself as a candidate before filing the appropriate paperwork.”

Unfortunately for Adkins, the road ahead isn’t looking any smoother. She faces a long race to the bottom against former drug company lobbyist Sara Hart Weir, who herself is facing fire from parents and advocates who believe that she used “Down syndrome as a pathway to her own political success,” while leading the National Down Syndrome Society.

Looks like Adkins’ campaign spokesperson – who came under fire last year for falsely representing herself in an ad against Rep. Sharice Davids – is going to have her hands full!

“There is no question that Republican voters in Kansas’ third district are stuck with two bad options,” said DCCC Spokesperson Brooke Goren. “The next 11 months are shaping up to be a damaging race to the bottom with both Brownback advisor Amanda Adkins and drug company lobbyist Sara Hart Weir on defense for repeatedly putting powerful special interests ahead of what’s best for Kansas.”
