Colorado 8th’s GOP primary candidate and Thornton Mayor Janifer Kulmann is once again making headlines for infuriating the residents she’s supposed to represent. Yesterday, the Denver Post detailed her fraught history in public office.
Throughout her time as mayor, Kulmann has racked up lawsuits and public condemnation for abusing the power of her position at taxpayers’ expense:
-
In 2018, Kulmann was sued in federal court for blocking the free speech rights of environmental activists.
-
In 2020, residents accused Kulmann of violating Colorado’s transparency laws after she took a taxpayer funded trip to Washington, DC without offering proper notification.
-
In 2021, another lawsuit was filed against Kulmann for allegedly violating the state’s term limits statute.
-
Last month, residents accused Kulmann and members of the Thornton City Council of disenfranchisement after the Council threw out a fellow elected member over alleged political disagreements.
Maddy Mundy, DCCC spokesperson:
“It’s astounding Janifer Kulmann is seeking higher office when she cannot even perform her duties as mayor without being accused of abuse of power, voter disenfranchisement, and violating constituents’ free speech. The stakes are too high for Colorado’s working families to let this failed mayor anywhere near Congress.”
