ICYMI: Emilia Sykes Leads Charge to Hold Airlines Accountable and Protect Passengers’ Wallets

Rep. Sykes: “Passengers should not have to bear the financial and personal burden when airlines fail to deliver the service they sell.”

Congresswoman Emilia Sykes is championing new legislation that would require airlines to compensate passengers and provide rebooking services for major flight delays, ensuring hardworking families are protected when airlines fail to deliver on timely service.

Rep. Sykes’ Airline Passenger Compensation Act is a direct response to the Trump Administration’s withdrawal of common sense consumer protections late last year – a move that was praised by airline lobbyists and allowed companies to put profits over passengers. The bill would require airlines to provide hundreds of dollars in compensation after major flight delays.

Spectrum News 1: Ohio lawmaker proposes bill to compensate airline passengers for long delays

  • Rep. Emilia Sykes, D-Ohio, introduced a bill that would require airlines to compensate passengers for major flight delays caused by airlines.
  • “It’s especially important right now. If people are traveling, they want to have some security in the fact that schedules change, due to no fault of their own. And they want to be compensated for whatever inconvenience they may have,” Sykes said. “So this is a consumer protection bill.”
  • Under Sykes’ bill, compensation would range from $300 for a three-hour delay to $775 for a delay of nine hours or more.
  • The measure is modeled off a rule proposed in the final weeks of the Biden administration, and on European airline regulations. However, the Trump administration officially withdrew the proposal in November.
  • “A lot of travelers are on their own. So this is just to help them travel a little bit with more security and knowing that things will be taken care of when there are delays and cancellations due to no fault of their own,” Sykes said.
