ICYMI: Facing Newly Competitive District, Yvette Herrell’s Extreme Views on Health Care Put Her in Hot Water

Time and time again, Yvette Herrell has been lambasted for her extreme and conspiratorial positions on health care:

Instead of working to get her state vaccinated, she joined right-wing pundits in hawking ivermectin as a treatment for COVID, despite overwhelming evidence that the drug is ineffective and dangerous.

She consistently attacks reproductive health care access and cheered Texas’ draconian abortion ban, which over the weekend led to the arrest of a young woman on murder charges for simply pursuing an abortion.

Now, a new story from the NM Political Report details how once-in-a-decade redistricting could finally hold Herrell accountable for her dangerous views – including her anti-freedom stance on reproductive health care. In 2022, Yvette Herrell is facing the most competitive race of her political life as she struggles to defend her radical record. Read more below:

NM Political Report: Abortion rights could play a key role in the race for southern New Mexico’s U.S. House seat

  • U.S. Rep. Yvette Herrell, who is in her first term as a member of Congress, is a staunch anti-abortion Republican.

  • She also represents the area of New Mexico that shares a border with Texas, which passed a highly criticized anti-abortion law last year. The law makes abortion illegal in that state after six weeks through an enforcement mechanism that many abortion advocates call a “bounty hunter” scheme. Herrell has championed that law on social media.

  • With newly drawn district lines, Democrats see an opportunity to try to pick up the Second Congressional District seat in November.

  • When the state redistricted in late last year, the lines of New Mexico’s Second Congressional District changed. Democrats hold a 13.2 point registration advantage over Republicans and it is now the district with the largest Hispanic population in the state, according to Democratic advocates.

  • Maddy Mundy, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson, called Herrell “an enemy to safe abortion access.”

  • “She cheered Texas’ devastating abortion ban and now, New Mexico is a lifeline for desperate Texas women seeking the health care they need. New Mexico voters understand what’s at stake and will kick Yvette Herrell and her radical agenda out of office…”
