All across the country, reports keep coming in of the numerous town halls taking place during the congressional recess. Some are rowdy, some downright nasty, and some no doubt are the civil exchanges our citizens have a right to expect. The latter, of course, do not make the TV evening news. And so it goes, except in the 8th Congressional District.

In the week before the break, a group of 10 Doylestown Democrats agreed to call both of Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick’s offices and ask about town halls.

[…] To no one’s surprise, the polite young staffers who answered the calls allowed that there were no town halls scheduled, although they would pass along the requests for them.

[…] However, there are other things on our minds in dealing with this difficult administration, and it is beginning to seem that the “independent voice in Washington” is just that: independent of the people who pay his salary.

[…] During his campaign for our votes, Congressman Fitzpatrick made much of his training as an FBI agent. Doesn’t such training teach agents how to handle stressful situations? And doesn’t it take a certain amount of intestinal fortitude to even be an FBI agent? Is Congressman Fitzpatrick so afraid to be questioned about his votes that he cannot appear before us face to face?
