Garrett Misuses Campaign Funds, Potentially Violates Law

“Tom Garrett’s misuse of state senate campaign funds to prop up his federal campaign raises serious ethical and legal questions for him,” said DCCC spokesman Jermaine House. “This is not a simple mistake that he can just paper over with an apology. Tom Garret needs to explain why he thought it was okay to ignore the law.”

ICYMI: Daily Progress – Garrett campaign resolves spending issue

Sen. Tom Garrett Jr., R-Buckingham, and his campaign staff used funds from his state senate account to pay for one expense in his campaign for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, which is prohibited by campaign finance laws.

According to campaign expenditure information reported to the Virginia Public Access Project, Garrett’s state senate account paid $1,495 to SingleTree Media in January 2016 for design of his congressional website.

Under Federal Election Commission regulations, a candidate’s federal campaign cannot use funds or assets from the same candidate’s nonfederal accounts — in this case, a state senate account.

Andrew Griffin, spokesman for Garrett’s campaign, said they have been made aware of the error and have spoken with the FEC in order to fix it. He added that there doesn’t seem to be any other issues other than the $1,495 payment.

Griffin said this resolution is expected to show up on the campaign’s next financial report.
