Scott Garrett’s anti-equality views and pro-discrimination record are not only embarrassing his constituents in North Jersey and his corporate donors, they are hurting his chances at re-election.
According to NorthJersey.com, “Rep. Scott Garrett raised half of what his challenger raised in last three months of 2015.”
Garrett’s potential Democratic challenger, Josh Gottheimer, raised $375,000 in the final quarter of 2015, whereas Garrett took in only $163,000.
The lackluster fundraising is yet another sign of Garrett’s increasing vulnerability this cycle following the controversy he generated this past summer for his opposition to LGBT candidates running for elected office.
Since then, Garrett’s long-standing corporate donors have dropped their support for his campaign in droves. And in the face of growing backlash, Garrett doubled down on his anti-equality views and pro-discrimination record.
Garrett’s 4th quarter fundraising has now put the issue of his vulnerability at the forefront of the campaign. NJ.com questioned, “Is this the sign N.J.’s 6-term Congressman may be in trouble this time?”
“Scott Garrett’s belief that sexual orientation should disqualify a person from running for elected office is hitting him where it hurts the most, his campaign war chest,” said Bryan Lesswing at the DCCC. “By taking his bigotry out of the closet, Garrett is losing his corporate donors – and by extension his shot at keeping his seat this November.”
