ICYMI: GOP Leaders Try to Rescue Flailing Young Kim

The GOP overestimated Kim’s ability to appeal to new voters

National Republicans are staging a last minute intervention to try and salvage struggling Rep. Young Kim’s primary campaign. Just five days before her primary, Rep. Kim is starting to realize she may not even make it on to the ballot this November. In a desperate attempt to course correct, Washington Republicans are pumping huge sums of money into her flailing race.

Kim’s primary opponent Greg Raths is scaring Kim so much she and GOP leaders have spent well over $1 million to fend off his growing popularity.

“Even if Kim makes it to the ballot – and that’s a big if – she will be left weakened after this bruising primary,” said DCCC spokesperson Maddy Mundy, “ The general election is going to be a golden opportunity for Democrats to win back this seat.”

  • …with nearly 80 percent of voters in the district new to Kim, mean that lots of voters know little about her — and a Trump-style Republican is running to her right. The result has been about $1 million in Republican television ads during what was supposed to be a sleepy primary.

  • For many candidates — even incumbents like Kim — there is a real risk in getting lost in a list of names.

  • Even more notable: The Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC that is aligned with Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the minority leader, and is devoted to making him speaker, has also jumped in, with even more ads attacking Raths.

  • The total anti-Raths spending is now around $1 million, according to AdImpact, the ad-tracking service — a sign of the importance of the race, for which there has been scant public polling.

  • Furthermore, the G.O.P. infighting, Wallin said, could hurt the party in the general election. “The Democrats emerge unscathed,” he said. “And the Republicans have beaten the snot out of each other in the primary.”
