ICYMI: Hypocritical Herrell Slammed for Touting Infrastructure Funding After Voting Against It

Today, Jessica Velasquez, Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico, penned an op-ed in the Carlsbad Current Argus slamming Representative Yvette Herrell for hypocritically touting infrastructure funding secured through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal after voting against it.

“Despite bipartisan support and clear benefits for New Mexico, Representative Herrell was an outspoken opponent of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, even accusing those who voted for it of ‘selling out America.’ Herrell’s rhetoric echoed that of GOP extremists, including Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who called Republicans who voted for the bill ‘traitors.’”

Despite Herrell’s protestations, now that some $3.7 billion in investments are heading to New Mexico, she is happy to take credit for the funds, submitting op-eds and penning letters in a pathetic attempt to save face with her constituents.

“After failing to find the courage to stand up to her party bosses and vote for a deal that is now bringing billions in new investments to New Mexico, it’s no surprise Yvette Herrell is too cowardly to be honest with her constituents,” said DCCC spokesperson Maddy Mundy. “Herrell is adding insult to injury by lying about her record, but here’s the truth: if Yvette Herrell had her way, New Mexico’s working families would be denied investments in good-paying jobs, environmental protections and critical infrastructure investments that are making New Mexico safer.”

Read more in the Carlsbad Current Argus: Velasquez: Herrell’s hypocrisy on broadband access:

  • Last week, Congresswoman Yvette Herrell published an opinion piece outlining the importance of broadband access and touting the $42.5 billion that President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will provide for broadband deployment nationwide. What Representative Herrell failed to mention is that she voted against the legislation that will make these advancements possible.

  • The sweeping bipartisan bill provides a minimum of $3.7 billion for New Mexico, including $366 million to improve public transportation options, at least $100 million to help provide broadband coverage across the state, $355 million to improve New Mexico’s water infrastructure, and $38 million to protect against wildfires.

  • This isn’t the first time Herrell has sided with radical Washington Republicans over her constituents in New Mexico.

  • In March 2021, Congressman Herrell voted with her party to oppose $7.25 billion in funding for small-businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. That same month, she opposed the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which supports domestic violence shelters and provides resources for those who have been sexually assaulted.

  • Again and again, Representative Herrell has shown us that she cares more about partisan politics than the well-being of southern New Mexicans.

  • Southern New Mexicans deserve a representative who will vote in their best interest, not a hypocrite who toes the party line.
