Meehan Loses Major Republican Endorsement to Primary Challenger

The news that Berks County Republicans endorsed Stan Casacio over Congressman Pat Meehan is just the latest development underscoring Congressman Meehan’s increasing vulnerability.  With the Republican establishment in Southeast Pennsylvania beginning to reject Meehan and the likelihood of Donald Trump becoming the Republican Presidential nominee – Congressman Meehan’s electoral security is dwindling . Even Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball, a respected elections analysis and ratings website, recently moved PA-7 into a competitive category, after Democratic candidate Bill Golderer gained national media attention for his high performing campaign.

“The conventional wisdom that Congressman Meehan is untouchable has been erased over the last few months,” said Jermaine House of DCCC. “With his primary challenger securing a major Republican endorsement, Donald Trump leading the Republican Presidential Primary, and a strong Democrat in the race, Congressman Meehan is no longer safe in this district that President Obama won in 2008.”

ICYMI: Berks County GOP endorses U.S. Rep. Pat Meehan’s primary challenger (Reading Eagle)

Berks County Republicans are supporting commercial developer Stan Casacio in his primary challenge against U.S. Rep. Pat Meehan.

The Berks County GOP endorsed Casacio, of Montgomery County, over Meehan, of Delaware County, for the Republican nomination in 7th Congressional District.

The committee also endorsed state Sen. Lloyd Smucker, of Lancaster County, for the 16th Congressional District, which includes the city of Reading, and state Sen. John C. Rafferty Jr., of Montgomery County, for state attorney general.

And the following candidates who are uncontested in the primary also picked up the Berks GOP endorsement: U.S. Rep. Ryan Costello, 6th Congressional District; Otto W. Voit III, state treasurer; John Brown, state auditor general; state Sen. David G. Argall, 29th State Senatorial District; and state Reps. Jerry Knowles, Jim Cox and Mark M. Gillen.

Local party rules don’t allow endorsements for candidates running in races entirely within Berks. But the committee “recommended” two uncontested candidates in such districts: State Reps. Barry Jozwiak of Bern Township and David M. Maloney Sr. of Pike Township.

Committee officials said there may be further recommendations issued.
