“It’s disappointing but not surprising that Congressman Pearce would turn his back on the significant number of Hispanic constituents in his district by supporting Donald Trump, whose entire candidacy has been an attack on Hispanic people,” said DCCC Spokesman Tyler Law. “The reality is that Congressman Pearce has long had a record that matches Trump’s rhetoric. Trump’s nomination will further highlight how out-of-touch Pearce is with hardworking families in the 2nd District.”

New Mexico’s sole Republican congressman says he will back any GOP presidential nominee over Democrat Hillary Clinton, even if that nominee is Donald Trump.

But U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce told The Associated Press on Friday he disagrees with some of Trump’s proposals about the U.S.-Mexico border and will have no problem standing up to Trump if he believes those proposals will hurt the border region.

He says those proposals wouldn’t get through Congress anyway.

The Hobbs Republican says if Trump wins the required number of delegates to secure the GOP nomination, the party should respect the will of the voters and not try to thwart Trump at any contested Republican convention.

Pearce represents New Mexico’s congressional district along the U.S. border with a predominantly Latino electorate.
