The Newsday editorial board has endorsed Laura Gillen in New York’s 4th Congressional District, saying “no one will be more aggressive, dogged and determined in fighting for her district.”
Newsday cited Gillen’s history as a Democrat with the “tenacity, thoughtful, planning, and crucial goal-setting” to get things done in office even with substantial Republican opposition.
Gillen’s track record of successes includes pushing through stricter ethics rules to prevent corruption and save taxpayers money in Hempstead, as well as securing critical funds to make tangible strides in housing and infrastructure in her community.
Newsday did not mince words about Gillen’s opponent, Anthony D’Esposito, whose “dark vision of a district where and a region where criminals wreak havoc and mayhem without fear of retribution just isn’t real.” The board excoriated D’Esposito for his widely-criticized use of a graphic video of a paramedic “being brutally stabbed to death” as campaign fodder, and his refusal to apologize after the fact.
The endorsement also called out D’Esposito for his overall lack of preparedness, saying he “doesn’t seem to have a deep understanding of the issues he’d have to consider in Congress outside of policing.”
DCCC Spokesperson Ian Clarke:
“Laura Gillen is a strong policy-first advocate for Long Island communities with the determination and deep knowledge required to make a real impact in Congress. While D’Esposito is spewing lies and attempting to stoke fear, Gillen is running on the values that matter to real people in this district.”
