ICYMI: NH-01 GOP Primary Set to Celebrate Extremists

Race to the Right Already Enters Dangerous Waters

The contest to be the Trumpiest, furthest right candidate is on in the NH-01 GOP primary.

Last night, WMUR reported both shadow lobbyist Matt Mowers and Trumper Karoline Leavitt are sponsoring an auction with known anti-semite Rep. Dawn Johnson (R-Laconia) that had featured an item signed by another anti-semite, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene before the item was pulled down.

It shows the sad state of the Republican Party that this GOP primary is more interested in celebrating these extremists than providing any solutions for the people of New Hampshire.

NH Primary Source: Autographed Marjorie Taylor Greene bumper sticker pulled from Belknap GOP fundraiser auction

Jewish Democratic lawmakers call on Sununu, Mowers, Leavitt to drop event sponsorships

  • CALL TO DROP SPONSORSHIPS. A bumper sticker autographed by controversial conservative U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia was pulled Tuesday from a silent auction planned to be held during a major Republican fundraiser this weekend.

  • The move came after WMUR sought responses to sharp Democratic criticism of influential Republicans, including Gov. Chris Sununu, who are sponsoring the event. The Democrats cited alleged antisemitic posts and statements from Greene and from another event sponsor, state Rep. Dawn Johnson of Laconia.

  • Five Democratic members of the state Legislature who are Jewish called on Sununu, 1st Congressional District candidate Karoline Leavitt and likely soon-to-be-announced 1st District candidate Matt Mowers to drop their sponsorships, citing the mention in the advertisement for the event that an “item” signed by Greene will be part of the silent auction.

  • Both Greene and Johnson have been criticized widely for posts and comments viewed as antisemitic. Both have apologized but have refused to resign their respective seats.

  • Greene compared COVID-19 mask mandates to the treatment of Jewish people in Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. After visiting the Holocaust Museum, she apologized in June for making “hurtful” statements.

  • Johnson last year shared on Facebook an antisemitic meme from The Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi, white supremacist website. In her apology, she wrote that she was unaware of the source of the article.

  • The New Hampshire Democratic Party shared with New Hampshire Primary Source a joint statement by state Sen. Jay Kahn of Keene and state Reps. Paul Berch of Westmoreland, Jeffrey Salloway of Lee, Nicole Klein Knight of Manchester and Amanda Elizabeth Toll, also of Keene, citing what they called the antisemitism of Greene and Johnson. “By joining Marjorie Taylor Greene and Rep. Dawn Johnson as sponsors and donors to the Belknap County Republican Gala, Governor Sununu, Matt Mowers, and Karoline Leavitt are signaling that (Greene and Johnson’s) hate and antisemitism are welcome in New Hampshire and the Republican Party,” the lawmakers wrote.

  • “As elected leaders, it is important for all of us to make clear that bigotry, racism, hatred and antisemitism have no place in our political process. “We urge Governor Sununu, Matt Mowers, and Karoline Leavitt to stand with New Hampshire’s Jewish community, drop their sponsorships of this toxic event and promise that neither they nor their campaign representatives will attend.”
