ICYMI: Pat Ryan Takes Colin Schmitt to Task on Abortion, Social Security

Colin Schmitt’s threat to abortion rights and Social Security on display during NY-18 debate

In yesterday’s Spectrum News 1 debate between Rep. Pat Ryan and extremist Colin Schmitt, no amount of wriggling could disguise the clear threat that Schmitt and a potential GOP majority pose to both reproductive freedom and critical programs like Social Security.

Pressed on Republicans’ well-established plans to hamstring Social Security, Schmitt falsely insisted that no such plans existed. This comes as the overwhelming majority of House Republicans, and Schmitt himself, have signed on to Kevin McCarthy’s “Commitment to America” – a dangerous right-wing blueprint that would open the door to Social Security cuts.

Republican leadership has also openly geared up to use the debt-limit deadline to try and force cuts to Social Security and Medicare – effectively holding the full faith and credit of the U.S. government hostage in order to gut benefits for seniors.

On abortion, Schmitt lied again, and repeatedly refused to state whether he would support exceptions to abortion in the case where it is an absolute necessity.

Luckily, that question is answered by Schmitt’s indisputable record of opposing a woman’s right to choose. As an assemblyman, Schmitt voted against codifying basic reproductive freedom, fought against improving access to contraception, and cheered the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

DCCC Spokesperson Ian Clarke:
“It’s a shame that Colin Schmitt doesn’t have the courage to be honest, but thankfully we know exactly how big a threat Colin and his GOP allies are to reproductive freedom and the future of programs like Medicare and Social Security. Extremists like Colin would be a disaster for women and seniors nationwide, and it is imperative that voters stop them at the ballot box on Election Day.”
