ICYMI: POLITICO Highlights Trump’s Problem with South Florida Hispanics

South Florida Democrats Highlight South Florida Republicans’ Trump Problem

From Politico:

  • “State Sen. Rene Garcia, a Miami Republican, says it is ‘demeaning’ that Donald Trump questioned the objectivity of a federal judge based, in part, on his Mexican ethnicity, comments that underscore the problems Trump will have in Hispanic-rich South Florida.”
  • “ ‘These demeaning words seek to divide the county among racial lines, and that is simply contrary to the American values that have made our country great,’ read the statement from Garcia.”
  • “Trump’s unpopularity in the region could have an impact on state races, as Democrats try to make gains in the GOP-controlled Legislature.”
  • “Trump’s poll numbers had been toxic in South Florida before his comments about Curiel, and wont b helped even as he tries to distance himself from the backlash”

From South Florida Democrats

  • “Donald Trump’s un-American and blatantly racist attacks against Judge Gonzalo Curiel are an affront to the Latino community here in South Florida. The Republican leader’s  barrage of attacks against the Latino Community appear to have no end in sight and perfectly underscore why we need stand up leadership in Washington.

“For far too long, Carlos Curbelo has allowed the anti-immigrant and anti-Latino fervor to grow in the Republican Party by capitulating to the obstructionists who sued over DACA/DAPA and supported Paul Ryan for Speaker of the House at expense of immigration reform. Soon enough, South Floridians will speak loudly against Trump’s racism and Carlos Curbelo’s tenure of complicity and being on the wrong side when it mattered most.” – Annette Taddeo in FL-26

  • “Donald Trump’s recent attacks on a federal judge are both racist in nature, and show a fundamental disrespect for our constitutional democracy. Given the hateful and un-American rhetoric coming from the standard-bearer of her party, it is not simply enough for Ros-Lehtinen to say ‘Never Trump’. In the face of hatred and bigotry, we should expect our leaders to stand up against purveyors of intolerance – I am running for Congress to do exactly that.

“If Rep. Ros-Lehtinen truly believes her own, ‘Never Trump’-rhetoric, then she needs to say “I’m with her.” Hillary Clinton is the only thing standing between Mr. Trump and the White House. Does Rep. Ros-Lehtinen support Hillary? I know that I do.”- Scott Fuhrman in FL-27

POLITICO: Garcia: Trump’s statements highlight his problems with South Florida Hispanics

By Matt Dixon

State Sen. Rene Garcia, a Miami Republican, says it is “demeaning” that Donald Trump questioned the objectivity of a federal judge based, in part, on his Mexican ethnicity, comments that underscore the problems Trump will have in Hispanic-rich South Florida.

“These demeaning words seek to divide the county among racial lines, and that is simply contrary to the American values that have made our country great,”

Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has said federal Judge Gonzalo Curiel has treated him unfairly in a lawsuit against Trump University, his now defunct real estate school. Trump has said his criticism is based on what he deems unfair rulings in the case, but has also said the Mexican heritage of Curiel, who was born in Indiana, could be impacting the case because of Trump’s controversial proposal to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Curiel’s parents immigrated to the United States from Mexico.
