The Supreme Court has officially overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating the constitutional right to abortion for millions of women and undoing 50 years of precedent.
It’s a future that IL-11 Republicans have long been working toward – and now the GOP candidates will have to own up to their extreme, deeply unpopular positions:
-
Catalina Lauf has pledged to “roll back” reproductive freedom and would not rule out supporting a nationwide abortion ban.
-
Jerry Evans supports a nationwide abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.
Make no mistake: Illinois Republicans are on the wrong side of this issue. Polling conducted after the leak of the SCOTUS draft opinion overturning Roe shows: by a two-to-one margin, people oppose Roe being overturned; 80% of people believe abortion should be decided between a woman and her doctor; and nearly two-thirds of people oppose the GOP’s plan to institute a nationwide abortion ban.
DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn:
“The stakes in this election could not be higher: every Illinois GOP candidate is unabashedly anti-choice and would be a reliable vote in Congress against women’s reproductive freedoms. They couldn’t be more out of step with Illinoisans – and we will remind Illinois voters of their cruel extremism every day until November.”
