Memo reveals GOP’s playbook – “We Knew, Didn’t Tell You, Blame China”
With nearly one million COVID-19 infections nationwide and more than 26 million Americans losing their jobs due to the pandemic, Republicans double down on deflecting blame for failing to respond and prepare the country for the pandemic. It is a playbook that House Republicans have long been following, despite ignoring intelligence community warnings and downplaying the crisis from the beginning.
The memo comes on the heels of the President’s repeated failures to adequately prepare and respond to the COVID-19 crisis, and Congressional Republicans prioritizing wealthy and special interests over hospitals, first responders, and working class families in stimulus bill after stimulus bill. Meanwhile, Democrats have been leading our nation’s response to the pandemic and ensuring everyday Americans and small businesses get the help and relief that they need.
The anti-China rhetoric perpetuated by the Republican Party has also led to a spike in anti-Asian American hate crimes and sentiment across the United States, with over a thousand incidents reported including the stabbing of a 2- and 6-year old. The Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans have taken no action to address the surge in hate crimes nor condemn anti-Asian American hate.

“In absence of leadership from the White House, Democrats are focused on leading the nation’s response by ensuring working families, small businesses, and first responders have the resources they need to weather this crisis. Meanwhile, Washington Republicans’ smoke and mirrors act in order to shift blame won’t work. They will have to answer for their efforts to cut access to healthcare and prioritize relief for the wealthy and special interests during this crisis.”
