Is New Super PAC with Ties to Peter Meijer Another Scheme to Bail Out His Endangered Primary Campaign?

The pop-up Super PAC formed just six days after polling showed a “concerning picture” for Peter Meijer’s primary election prospects against Trump-endorsed candidate John Gibbs

In case you missed it, allies of vulnerable Congressman Peter Meijer launched a Super PAC in an apparent effort to prop up his doomed campaign. The Super PAC, Michigan Conservative Action, “shares connections to players who have supported” Meijer and was launched just days after polling published in POLITICO showed he’s on track to lose his primary to Trump-endorsed challenger John Gibbs.

And this isn’t the first time Meijer has been under scrutiny for questionable campaign finance practices to prop up his campaign. In 2020, Meijer got caught in a potentially illegal straw donation scheme where his family appeared to try to discreetly funnel $150,000 to a Super PAC to boost his campaign, a move a nonpartisan watchdog group Campaign Legal Center called a “serious violation.”

“Peter Meijer is running scared and it shows,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “From his nasty Trump-backed primary from the right to his out-of-touch voting record, the writing is on the wall for Peter Meijer, and this shady outside group shows that he and his allies are getting desperate.”

Detroit News: Super PAC launches in west Michigan

  • A new super political action committee, Michigan Conservative Action, has been created in west Michigan.

  • The PAC, formed in late February according to federal campaign finance filings, shares connections to players who have supported U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer, R-Grand Rapids Township.

  • Meijer is running for reelection in the newly drawn 3rd Congressional District, where he’s likely to again face Democrat Hillary Scholten, whom he defeated in 2020 in the most expensive U.S. House race in Michigan that year. Meijer also faces a primary challenge from John Gibbs, a Republican endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

  • Filings for the PAC, submitted on Feb. 26, list an employee of Bulldog Compliance, a division of GOP campaign finance compliance company Red Curve Solutions, as its treasurer and custodian of records. Red Curve Solutions founder Bradley Crate also serves as the treasurer and custodian of records for Meijer’s congressional campaign committee, leadership PAC and joint fundraising committee. Red Curve Solutions provides consulting services for several Republican committees.

  • Meijer’s campaign committee, leadership PAC and joint fundraising committee also share the same McLean, Virginia-based bank as the newly created super PAC.

  • Bulldog Compliance did not respond to a request for comment as to which candidates or issues the PAC plans to support in the 2022 midterm elections.

  • Unlike traditional PACs, super PACs can raise unlimited funds from companies, individuals and other groups but cannot directly coordinate with or contribute to candidates.
