Thornton Mayor Janifer “Jan” Kulmann became the latest entrant in the clown car GOP primary in CO-08, bringing her failed record of wasting taxpayer money into a field of people renowned for doing so.
Let’s take a look at how Kullman and her competitors Barbara Kirkmeyer and Lori Saine have put Coloradans’ hard-earned tax dollars to “work”:
-
Denver Post: “The mayor of Thornton last month left half the city council in the dark when she went to Washington, D.C. on a taxpayer-funded trip, sparking concerns about transparency and potential violations of the state’s sunshine laws.”
-
Colorado Sun: “Kulmann, when she was Thornton’s mayor pro tem, was sued by anti-fracking activists whom she blocked on social media. The case was settled for $30,000 and she agreed to unblock the activists.
-
Greeley Tribune: “Weld County must pay more than $30,000 to the IRS in the wake of an audit that looked into a variety of areas, including the county’s practice of allowing its commissioners to claim mileage between their homes and work, according to information released by the county. […] The main issue with mileage, which only Weld County Commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer still claims, is the reimbursements for home-to-work commuting mileage are supposed to be taxable, according to the IRS.”
-
Colorado Public Radio: “During her time as a county commissioner, Kirkmeyer was one of the faces of the short-lived secession movement to pursue a 51st state. County voters eventually rejected the effort.”
-
Denver Post: “Denver police are still investigating Saine, who is accused of bringing a loaded 9mm, semi-automatic handgun into a security checkpoint last week at Denver International Airport. She spent a night in jail before being released on bond Wednesday.”
Helen Kalla, DCCC spokesperson:
“Jet-setter Janifer Kulmann, secessionist Barbara Kirkmeyer, and ‘clueless’ Lori Saine have shown they’re only interested in elected office so they can use Coloradans’ hard-earned tax dollars for their own self-serving stunts. If these candidates are the best Republicans have to offer, they might as well give up now on winning this seat.”
