Jared Golden Leads Bipartisan Effort To Restore Federal Worker Union Rights Revoked By Trump

Golden: “I don’t think anyone who voted in the last election, no matter who they voted for, were voting to silence the voices of workers or to take away their collective bargaining rights.”

Yesterday, Congressman Jared Golden
was joined by Leader Jeffries, federal union leaders, and a bipartisan group of lawmakers to push for a House vote on the Protect America’s Workforce Act: legislation that would overturn a union-busting executive order by Donald Trump that eliminated collective bargaining rights for more than 1 million federal workers earlier this year. With more than 12,000 federal workers in Maine, Golden is spearheading the effort to restore their collective bargaining rights and revoke Trump’s executive order. The legislation already has more cosponsors than any other piece of legislation introduced by a Democrat in this Congress.Read more on the Congressman’s efforts to restore federal workers’ union rights:

Maine Morning Star:
Golden attempting to force vote to restore federal worker union rights revoked by Trump

  • Democratic U.S. Rep Jared Golden of Maine is attempting to force a vote on his bill that would nullify President Donald Trump’s executive order stripping union rights from about two-thirds of the federal workforce.
  • On Thursday, Golden and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York announced they are urging members of both parties to endorse a discharge petition, a procedure that would force a vote on the House floor, though such petitions have historically rarely been successful.
  • “I don’t think anyone who voted in the last election, no matter who they voted for, were voting to silence the voices of workers or to take away their collective bargaining rights,” Golden said on a press call with union leaders in Maine Thursday afternoon.
  • The bill already has some support from the majority party. […] It currently has 222 co-sponsors, every Democrat and seven Republicans, which would be enough support to pass the measure in the lower chamber — if Republican leadership brings it up for a vote.
  • “We don’t need every one of them that co-sponsored the bill to sign the discharge,” Golden said referring to the Republican co-sponsors, “although I don’t know why you would co-sponsor a bill if you feel strongly about it and then not sign the discharge.”
  • Trump’s executive order on March 27 banned collective bargaining agreements at government agencies with “national security interests.” These include the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Environmental Protection Agency, among numerous others, overall impacting more than 1 million workers.
  • One way to definitively resolve the lawsuits filed against the order, Golden said, would be for Congress to weigh in. Union leaders in Maine are hoping that will be the case.

Maine Public:
Rep. Golden, union leaders seek to force House vote on bill restoring collective bargaining

  • Maine Congressman Jared Golden is attempting to force a vote on a bill that would reverse a Trump executive order targeting unionized federal workers.
  • In March, President Trump eliminated the collective bargaining rights of roughly 1 million federal workers, citing national security concerns. […]
  • But Golden, a Democrat, said he believes the House would reverse that decision — if given the chance. Days after Trump issued his executive order, Golden […] introduced a bill to restore the negotiating rights of unionized workers in 18 federal agencies.
  • “We know if this bill comes to the House floor, we can win,” Golden said Thursday. “We have 222 co-sponsors, including seven Republicans — more than enough to pass this bill. But so far, no willingness to bring it to the floor from Republican leadership.”
  • Golden was speaking during a press conference at the U.S. Capitol signaling a more public push in his effort to force a House vote on his bill […]. He was joined by the presidents of four national labor unions and several of his Democratic colleagues, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York.
  • “The American people are watching,” Golden said. “If every member who signed onto this bill will join us, we can overturn this union-busting action and show America that this body will protect workers’ rights, no matter what.”
