In a radio interview this morning, Jen Kiggans (VA-02) dismissed concerns over abortion being outlawed, claiming it was a “shiny object” issue that was being used to “distract” voters.
Kiggans’ offhand comment suggesting safe, legal abortion isn’t top of mind for Virginia voters shows how out of touch she is – and her wishful thinking that her extreme anti-choice position won’t matter to voters in November. Kiggans celebrated when Roe v. Wade was overturned, asserting that there is “more work to be done to uphold the sanctity of life” and that her “fight for the unborn … will continue in Congress.”
Almost immediately, draconian abortion bans started going into effect across the country, including bans with no exceptions for the life of the mother, bans that threaten women and doctors with jail time, and bans at the “point of fertilization.”
“Jen Kiggans dismissing abortion being outlawed across the country as a ‘shiny object’ issue shows just how out of touch she really is,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “The rights of millions of Virginia women are in jeopardy because of Kiggans’ zealous, dangerous support for overturning Roe v. Wade and allowing abortion to be criminalized, even in the most difficult cases. Jen Kiggans might consider that a ‘distraction,’ but for Virginians, it’ll be their reason to reject her at the ballot box this November.”
