Last week, vulnerable Michigan Republican John James’ Republican Study Committee introduced an extreme MAGA budget that cuts critical funding for local law enforcement.
James’ budget specifically identifies and promotes a plan to “reduce funding for Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS).” The COPS program has received essential funding for decades to improve community policing, fight the addiction crisis, and support efforts to prevent violence in schools – including over $216.8 million just last year to hire 1,730 new police officers across the country.
James’ budget prioritizes rewarding the ultra-wealthy, raising costs for millions of working-class Americans, cutting Social Security and privatizing Medicare, and continuing relentless attacks on individual freedoms – all while making communities less safe.
DCCC Spokesperson Aidan Johnson:
“John James plans to make Macomb and Oakland County less safe by stripping local police departments of key funding to address crime and protect Michiganders. This budget is too extreme for Michigan, but James continues to put dangerous MAGA politics over public safety.”
