John Mica Must Stand Up to Rubio for Politicizing Zika
This week, Florida Senator Marco Rubio said that pregnant women infected with the Zika virus should not have the right to an abortion. Senator Rubio’s brazen remark is another setback to funding an adequate Zika response, again from Republicans adamant on politicizing a crisis that threatens Florida families. If he was serious about addressing the Zika crisis, Congressman John Mica would speak out against fellow Florida Republican Senator Rubio for politicizing this growing health crisis. Yet Mica remains silent on Rubio bringing anti-choice rhetoric into the Zika debate, just like Mica fell in line with House Republicans who played politics by adding anti-choice riders to a Zika funding bill.
“Until John Mica stands up to Senator Rubio for bringing anti-choice politics into the Zika crisis, Mica is complicit in Republicans’ politicization of this public health emergency,” said Christie Stephenson of the DCCC. “John Mica and House Republicans have already politicized Zika by refusing to take up a clean funding bill to ensure funding for a Zika response. While the health of countless women and families hangs in the balance, John Mica refuses to stand up to those in his own Party who are committed to playing political football with a funding bill.”
