Kaiser Family Foundation: House GOP Denials of Slashing Veterans’ Benefits “Mostly False”

PolitiFact: House Republican ‘Default on America Act’ would gut $2 billion from Veterans Affairs

Vulnerable House Republicans have repeatedly and consistently misled their constituents about the painful impacts their extreme spending proposal would have on our nation’s veterans, according to a new report from the Kaiser Family Foundation and PolitiFact.

[T]he VA represents one of the largest pieces of the pie in terms of discretionary spending, and, in the House-passed Limit, Save, Grow Act, no language was included to specifically protect it.

The House GOP plan does include a specific budget rescission for unspent covid relief funds. That translates to $2 billion coming from the VA.

House Republicans […] have said repeatedly they intend to protect this key constituency. But so far, such protections are not evident on paper.

We rate [the claim] as Mostly False.

“Case closed: extreme MAGA Republicans have been caught deceiving the American people about their vote for cruel cuts that would hurt the brave men and women who served our nation,” said Justin Chermol, a spokesperson for Leader Hakeem Jeffries and the DCCC. “Vulnerable House Republicans will be held accountable for their damning fibs from now until Election Day.”

REMINDER: According to the Department of Veteran Affairs, the ‘Default on America Act’ would gut funding for veterans’ health care by 22 percent – resulting in nearly 81,000 health service jobs within the VA, which would cause 30 million fewer veteran outpatient visits and lead to a dramatic increase of disability claims backlogs.
