The Kiss that Sealed No Deal

After Congressman Curbelo voted to kill the discharge petition he led, which would have forced his party to bring two bipartisan immigration bills to the floor, there was serious discussion about whether, by caving to Leadership, Congressman Curbelo had managed to bring Republicans to the table on immigration.

But as the dust settled on a 121-301 vote that officially pulled back the curtain on the ‘deal’ Congressman Curbelo had brokered after selling out DREAMers, it became crystal clear what Curbelo got for handing over every piece of leverage to immigration hardliners: a kiss.

Here’s POLITICO’s account from sources inside the room…

“As members were about to leave the room, Meadows tried to keep a positive tone. He kissed Curbelo on the forehead and said they’d continue working through the weekend.”

Instead of a deal, Congressman Curbelo is going home for the holiday without a solution for DREAMers and without a bill to end the separation of immigrant children from their families.
