| As a family doctor and state legislator in California’s Central Valley, Dr. Jasmeet Bains has delivered for her community and is on the front lines of the health care crises the community is facing thanks to Republicans like David Valadao.
The high cost of living and affordability are defining issues in this midterm cycle. They are especially prevalent in CA-22, which has the state’s highest enrollment in health coverage programs with nearly 70% of residents participating — that includes 87% of children and 82% of Latino constituents.
In a new interview with La Opinión, Dr. Bains discussed her background and work for her community, and how she is delivering for Latino voters in CA-22.
“The people in th[is] district are my neighbors, classmates, patients, and friends. We all want the same things: to be able to afford food, utilities, and rent; to have safe streets and access to health care; and to have the hope of building a better life for ourselves and our families,” she explained.
“Latino voters, and all voters, are tired of broken promises from Republicans. At every opportunity, Republicans, like David Valadao, have voted for policies that make life more expensive and difficult for working families,” Dr. Bains said..

La Opinión: Dr. Jasmeet Bains appeals to the Latino vote in California’s 22nd District
- Dr. Jasmeet Bains is seeking to be the Democratic nominee for California’s 22nd District and challenge Republican David Valadao, in a territory where 75% of the population is Latino.
- In a conversation in Spanish, Dr. Bains indicates that she learned the language due to her work as a doctor since her district has people from various parts of the world, including Latinos.
- Bains is the daughter of immigrants from India and has lived her entire life in Delano, California, a territory she represents as a state assemblywoman.
- Dr. Bains explained that her agenda focuses on issues she has worked on as an assemblywoman, including better medical services, but also job opportunities and seeking to reduce the cost of living.
- She criticized Republican Valadao, whom she accused of “selling out” the district’s voters to “party leaders.”
- Valadao was among the Republicans who voted for the so-called “Great Beautiful Act,” which provides more than $75 billion to immigration agencies and cut health insurance benefits for millions of people. It is estimated that this decision regarding health insurance will affect at least four million Latinos.
- Dr. Bains stated that she supports protecting U.S. borders, but does not endorse a policy of fear against immigrants, as she noted is happening under President Donald Trump’s administration.
- “We need a system that works for the people and keeps criminals out. That requires real solutions. We protect families who do the right thing. We keep our streets safe.”
