Lance’s Weakness Put on Full Display as Trump Kills Gateway Tunnel Project

From healthcare to taxes, the Republican Party has steamrolled Representative Leonard Lance like freshly laid asphalt. Now, with President Trump set to kill the vital Gateway Tunnel Project, it’s clear the GOP has no intention of ever heeding Leonard Lance’s weak and ineffective objections.

The Gateway Project includes construction of a new train tunnel under the Hudson River so that repairs can be made to the existing tunnel, damaged during Hurricane Sandy.  The current tunnel is the only rail link between New Jersey and Manhattan and is “key to 20 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product.”

Despite the project’s importance to “30 percent of all jobs in the U.S.,” Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao told the House Transportation Committee yesterday that President Trump is actively trying to kill the Gateway Project. Chao testifed, “Trump was only being ‘cordial’ when he expressed interest in funding Gateway” and that “the president is concerned about the viability of this project and the fact that New York and New Jersey have no skin in the game.”

Lance’s response? To meekly “hope the news account I read this morning is wrong.”

“The potential death of the Gateway Project has once again put Congressman Lance’s weakness and ineffectiveness on full display,” said DCCC Spokesman Evan Lukaske. “To call Lance a speed bump would be an insult to speed bumps, since people actually slow down before running over them. Lance has never accomplished anything in Congress, and it’s time voters replaced him with someone who can.”
