Lawler-Backed Shutdown Is Ripping Food Off of New Yorkers’ Tables

“A world of pain is about to start”

On day 23 of the Republican shutdown, nearly 3 million hardworking New Yorkers are at risk of losing SNAP benefits that help them put food on their families’ tables — and it’s all because of Mike Lawler and House Republicans.

As House Republicans, including Lawler, refuse to come to the negotiating table to end their shutdown “a number of states have announced that they’ll begin shutting down SNAP and other benefits due to the government shutdown, cutting off key safety nets for families in need.”

In New York, “SNAP ‘could be delayed’ if the shutdown continues into November. Nearly 3 million New Yorkers receive SNAP.”

REMINDERMike Lawler voted for the largest cuts to SNAP in history earlier this year, making New Yorkers pay more for their groceries. Now, as New Yorkers protest these devastating cuts, Lawler is doubling down on his cruelty and holding this key program hostage that feeds New Yorkers and keeps food affordable.

DCCC Spokesperson Riya Vashi:
“Mike Lawler couldn’t be more clear about how little he cares about working New Yorkers. More food is about to be ripped off people’s tables because of Republicans’ shutdown, and he can’t even be bothered to work on reopening the government to keep grocery costs from rising. Voters will remember his cruelty at the ballot box.”
