Lawsuit Filed in Brutal VA-05 GOP Primary

The primary contest between incumbent Congressman Denver Riggleman and Bob Good has grown so heated the courts are now involved.

Sunday afternoon, hours before a committee meeting was scheduled, several GOP Committee Chairs received an email threatening a lawsuit if they supported changing the nominating process from a convention to a primary, a change Congressman Denver Riggleman supported. After the call, despite no decisions made, a lawsuit was filed against Riggleman and the GOP committee.

Why such tension over the nominating process? Perhaps it has something to do with Good’s claims he’d secured over 60% of convention delegates so far.

As a reminder, this whole primary mess began because Republican insiders in VA-05 openly revolted against Riggleman after he officiated a same-sex wedding.

“Republicans in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District have set themselves up to either nominate Good, a man with no money, no name recognition, and no campaign on the ground, or Riggleman, a badly embattled Congressman who’s been widely rejected by his own party,” said DCCC Spokesperson Sarah Guggenheimer. “It’s time to get out the popcorn, because this primary mess just keeps getting more and more ridiculous.”
