Lobbying Questions Still Dogging Carlos Curbelo

In a new interview, WLRN’s John O’Connor is continuing to raise the same questions that have dogged Carlos Curbelo for weeks: who are his lobbying clients, and did they have business with the School Board?

From the interview:

  • “With Curbelo you have a guy who is being questioned. His wife owns a communications firm. He helps run the communications firm and so there have been questions about whether or not clients of that firm have gotten School District contracts.” [WBUR, 9/12/14]
  • “Again, he owns, helps run his wife’s communications firm so there has been that question about whether or not clients of the firm have had business contact with the school district.” [WBUR, 9/12/14]

“Each day that Carlos Curbelo refuses to disclose his lobbying clients and reveal his potential conflicts of interest with his work on the school board is another day we get more proof that Curbelo is putting himself and his paying clients over South Florida families,” said David Bergstein of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “After Curbelo was caught funneling millions of tax dollars in school board contracts to his political donors and lying on his disclosure reports, the scandal surrounding Curbelo’s unanswered questions is only intensifying.”

The Miami Herald revealed federal documents contradict Curbelo’s claims about his lobbying company. Curbelo’s Republican primary opponents and local political commentators have criticized him for refusing to disclose his clients, the Florida Democratic Party has requested a federal investigation into Curbelo for his failure to disclose his firm’s clients, and the Miami Dade Democratic Party has filed an House ethics complaint against Curbelo. Previously, the Miami New Times reported that Curbelo “has a history of approving contracts for campaign donors” on the School Board.

Today also marks the 30th day since Curbelo was asked by his Republican primary opponents to release his client list in order to reveal any potential conflict of interest with his work on the School Board.
