Lori Chavez-DeRemer (OR-05) Embraces Congressman Who Wants to Make Abortion “Illegal in All 50 States”

Lori Chavez-DeRemer (OR-05) keeps finding new ways to show Oregonians that she is wholeheartedly on-board with the Republican plan to ban abortion nationwide – and today’s photo-op with Congressman Bruce Westerman is another visual reminder of just how dangerous she would be in Congress. In an editorial for a local paper, Congressman Westerman wrote: “the pro-life movement will not be intimidated or frightened. We will always stand for the rights of the unborn until abortion is not only illegal in all 50 states, but unconscionable.”

While this image is shocking, it’s not surprising. Last week, a report in the Oregon Capital Chronicle revealed that the National Right to Life Victory Fund is spending thousands of dollars to boost Chavez-DeRemer. This organization is pushing model legislation to ban abortion without exception for rape or incest, and they are seeking to ban medication abortion at the federal level. And just this week, Chavez-DeRemer collected a $5,000 check from the National Pro-Life Alliance PAC – an organization that routinely asks candidates to commit to a constitutional amendment that bans abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest.

These extreme organizations and individuals are tripping over themselves to support Chavez-DeRemer for one reason alone: She is one of them. She will support extreme ban on abortion after just six weeks, before most women even know they’re pregnant. And she previously said she was “encouraged” by the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

DCCC Spokesperson Teddy Lake:
“Lori Chavez-DeRemer is a dangerous politician who will say anything to get elected, then turn her back on Oregon women the moment she gets to Washington. She can’t be trusted to look out for anyone but herself and her far-right, anti-choice backers.”
