In another desperate move to try to keep his job this November in a district that solidly favors Democrats, vulnerable Republican Carlos Curbelo released an ad portraying himself as bipartisan. In the ad, Carlos Curbelo says, “for Washington politicians, party always comes first… that’s not me.” Did he bite his tongue when he was reading the scripted line? Because in a very partisan Republican-led House, where his party has refused to tackle the nation’s most critical issues, Curbelo has aligned with Republicans since the day he arrived in Congress.
Carlos Curbelo voted for Speaker Ryan despite knowing that Ryan had made a deal with the Freedom Caucus to close the door to a bipartisan immigration reform bill and failed to stand up to party leaders on Zika when his district needed it most. And Carlos Curbelo continues to funnel money to Donald Trump-like Republicans through his sham immigration PAC.
This ad comes at a time when Florida’s 26th Congressional District leans more Democratic, putting Curbelo’s reelection chances zero to none, and South Floridians voters deserve to know that Curbelo’s new ad is as misleading as it is desperate.
“Carlos Curbelo’s political ambitions led him to put party first over South Florida families, and his party loyalty was promptly rewarded with a spot in House Republican leadership,” said Javier Gamboa of the DCCC. “With a more Democratic-leaning electorate that makes up Florida 26th Congressional District, Carlos Curbelo will have an uphill battle to keep his seat, especially when voters learn that he is saying one thing in Florida and doing quite another in Washington. Curbelo cannot claim to be bipartisan to Floridians and then happily march in lockstep in D.C. as a member of his party’s leadership.”
