U.S. Rep. Martha Roby isn’t the only establishment Alabama politician with a Moore problem. After outsider Roy Moore beat Washington-backed candidate Luther Strange for the Republican Senate nomination, Roby is feeling the heat from her own Trump-inspired primary challenger, Barry Moore. Barry Moore was the first Alabama elected official to endorse President Trump’s candidacy and appeared at a rally with then-candidate Trump in Mobile in August 2015. Moore has criticized Roby for bailing on Trump during the 2016 election, a move that inspired nearly 30,000 voters in her district to cast write-in ballots for pro-Trump Republicans.
“Since going to Washington, Representative Martha Roby voted with Paul Ryan and establishment Republicans more than 90% of the time,” said DCCC Spokesperson Jacob Peters. “Alabama voters just made a strong statement against do-nothing establishment politicians like Luther Strange and Martha Roby. Dumping Trump almost cost Roby last time around, and it’s clear that her own Moore problem isn’t going away anytime soon.”
