McCarthy & Emmer Stand Back As Far Right Extremists Find Allies in House GOP Caucus

New York Times: Rep. Paul Gosar’s association with the white nationalist Nick Fuentes is the most vivid example of the Republican Party’s growing acceptance of extremism.

As the House GOP caucus dives deeper into extremism, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and NRCC Chairman Tom Emmer are standing back in silence while their members use their power to uplift far right extremists.

White nationalist Nick Fuentes is even crediting GOP Rep. Paul Gosar for “almost exclusively” offering hope for the racist “America First” movement to thrive in Congress.

Gosar is far from the only extremist running rampant without consequence. According to the New York Times and Vice:

  • “Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida appeared at an event last year where security was handled by the Proud Boys, a far-right militia with more than a dozen members who have been charged in the Capitol riot.”
  • “Representative Lauren Boebert of Colorado has come under scrutiny for her ties to members of the Three Percenters, a radical militia group.”
  • “And before she was elected to Congress, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia endorsed executing Democratic lawmakers, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She was also an adherent of QAnon, the pro-Trump conspiracy movement that holds that a corrupt cabal of Democrats, global elites and career government employees who run a Satan-worshiping child sex-trafficking ring will soon be rounded up and punished for their misdeeds, and that Mr. Trump will be restored to the presidency.”
  • “The statements and actions have not resulted in any punishment from House Republican leaders, who have largely declined to publicly reprimand those in their conference who espouse fringe beliefs or peddle misinformation.”
  • In a speech last month, GOP Rep. Scott Perry “argued that differentiating between Democrats was like discerning between Germans during the Nazi reign—that it was fair to lump all Democrats together as extremists because even those who don’t support those views don’t stand up to their members who do.”

“McCarthy and Emmer’s silence speaks volumes about their priorities for the GOP caucus,” said DCCC Spokesperson Chris Taylor. “House Republicans have provided a safe haven for conspiracies, lies, and extremism, and we’re confident the American people will reject this increasingly dangerous behavior when they head to the voting booths.”
