McCarthy presses forward with rewarding Santos with committee assignments as growing list of Republicans call for Santos’ resignation
Throughout his disastrous and desperate battle for the Speakership, Kevin McCarthy catered to the most radical members of his conference. Though many details of his litany of concessions have yet to come to light, there is one that we know for sure:
McCarthy is cravenly sticking by George Santos.
Amid nonstop revelations of Santos’ lies, McCarthy has refused to hold Santos accountable for his deceit and numerous violations of federal law. Instead, McCarthy is rewarding the serial liar in a sad exchange for Santos’ loyalty.
Top Republicans were allegedly aware early on of Santos’ lies and shady background, and McCarthy even confirmed himself that he was aware of the Santos campaign’s unethical behavior, most notably that Santos’ aide was illegally impersonating McCarthy’s Chief of Staff to trick donors into funding his campaign. But with McCarthy’s embarrassing inability to control his caucus on full display, he’s desperately clinging on to every last vote, including Santos’.
Meanwhile in his caucus, an ever-growing list of Republicans are demanding Santos’ resignation and are even calling for his campaign accounts to be frozen amid numerous investigations and complaints.
One thing is clear: Kevin McCarthy was aware that George Santos was using fraudulent methods to get elected to Congress, and Kevin McCarthy knew that he needed George Santos to fulfill his life’s dream of becoming Speaker.
