McCarthy’s Middle-of-the-Night Concessions Reminds Voters the Republican Party is Run By Far-Right Extremists

Déjà vu: Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans once again strong-armed by far-right extremists in backroom deals

House Republicans are in ruins. As MAGA Republicans hold the U.S. economy hostage and threaten default in order to force cuts to programs American families depend on, Kevin McCarthy and his leadership team are desperately trying to round up enough votes to pass their catastrophic legislation.

Late last night, after saying he would not make any changes to his already dangerous legislation, Kevin McCarthy caved to demands from far-right extremists like House Freedom Caucus Chair Scott Perry and Matt Gaetz, and changed the legislation to force even more job cuts and further restrict food security and Medicaid programs.

This should come as no surprise. Afterall, it was these same far-right extremists who prevented Kevin McCarthy becoming speaker for 14 rounds of voting until he conceded to their demands in a series of backroom deals. In the end, every vulnerable Republican voted in favor of these demands and stood behind McCarthy despite his dangerous concessions.

DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“Time and again we are reminded that there are no more moderates in the House Republican caucus. Rather than stand up to their extreme, far-right colleagues who continue to strong-arm dangerous initiatives, vulnerable Republicans cave and act as extreme MAGA Republican rubber stamps. Their willful embrace of extremists and policies that would reap harm on everyday families will cost them in 2024.
