McGuire Campaigns With Youngkin, The Governor Whose Child Marriage Ban He Voted Against

McGuire was the sole member of the State Senate – Republican or Democrat – to vote against banning child marriage

John McGuire is hitting the campaign trail with Glenn Youngkin this weekend. There’s just one problem: McGuire was the only member of the Virginia State Senate to vote against one of Youngkin’s laws: the law that finally raised Virginia’s legal marriage age to 18 and ended child marriage in the Commonwealth. Every other Republican in the chamber voted yes. Youngkin signed the bill into law, while McGuire stood alone against it.

McGuire has offered a series of shifting explanations for that vote: first that Virginia needs more families, now that young members of the military should be able to marry children. When given the chance to end child marriage in Virginia, McGuire voted no.

The people of Central and Southside Virginia deserve to know where their congressman actually stands, and the record answers that question clearly.

“I was serving in the General Assembly when John McGuire cast that vote, and I remember how important this legislation was,” said Delegate Katrina Callsen. “Republicans and Democrats came together to protect 16-year-old girls from child marriage, and John McGuire was the only senator who voted against it. This wasn’t a complicated decision. It was about protecting children. John McGuire owes every parent and every young girl in Virginia an explanation for why he stood alone.”
