Subject: 100 DAYS OF BROKEN PROMISES
In just 100 days, House Republicans and Donald Trump have lost the support of the American people and left a trail of broken promises that will cost them the House majority next year.
During the 2024 campaign, House Republicans and Trump promised to lower costs on “day one.” Instead, prices continue to rise, the economy is in a tailspin, unemployment is up, consumer confidence is at historic lows, and Republicans are pushing a tax bill to benefit the wealthiest few and big corporations by cutting health care and food assistance, and making everyday goods more expensive.
House Republicans doubled down on these false promises during last year’s election. According to a September 2024 report from NBC News, roughly 40% of GOP ads for House races focused on the cost of living in the run up to the election. Here is just a sample:
-
Rep. Miller-Meeks (IA-01) campaign ad, Grocery Cart: “Do you wanna know how to decide your vote this year? Just look in your grocery cart. … I approve this message because we got to get these prices down.”
-
Rep. Bresnahan (PA-08) campaign ad, Bucket Truck 2.0: “I’m Rob Bresnahan. Send me to Congress because I won’t forget where I came from. I’ll get money back in your pockets and get Washington off their butts and out there with my guys rebuilding America.”
-
Rep. Kiggans (VA-02) campaign ad, Pennies: “I remember when 20 bucks fed the whole family with change to spare. But today, even the drive-thru costs a small fortune. … So I’m on a mission to slash wasteful spending and roll back prices for families. I’m Jen Kiggans, and I approve this message because if families are pinching pennies, then Washington can too.”
These broken promises will cost Republicans in the midterms. House Republicans have abdicated their central promise to the American people, embracing the largest tax increase on middle-class families in decades and greenlighting an extreme budget blueprint that would increase costs and rip away health care.
The next 100 days look even more grim for House Republicans as they plan to enact the largest cut to affordable health care via Medicaid in history to fund trillions in tax breaks for the wealthy.
Fighting Back: The DCCC and House Democrats will continue to fight back and hold Republicans accountable for their broken promises. Just this past week, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senator Cory Booker hosted a 12-hour livestream sit-in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to define the stakes of the forthcoming legislative fight. With every new bill that gets introduced, committee meeting held, and amendment vote taken, the American people will know that Republicans don’t work for them, they work for the billionaires.
Republicans On The Run: As House Democrats stay visible and prosecute the case, House Republicans are on the run. Because their agenda is so unpopular, Republicans are hiding from their constituents and refusing to hold in-person town halls (on advice from the NRCC). House Democrats are meeting voters where they are – participating in local community events and barnstorming the nation, including in GOP-held districts to host “People’s Town Hall” events. While House Republicans are too afraid to hear from voters about the disastrous impacts their policies are having in their communities, Democrats are showing up.
