MI-08 GOP Field Messier Than Ever With Weak Fundraising and No Clear Frontrunner

National Republicans struggled for months to find a candidate willing to lose to Congressman Dan Kildee. Now, the weak GOP field is as messy as ever with no clear frontrunner and weak fundraising across the board, with only weeks to go until the primary.

Nowhere is that more clear than in the Republican field’s Q2 fundraising reports. After being mired in a challenge to his candidacy and claims of attempting to buy petition signatures, carpetbagger Paul Junge posted a measly fundraising quarter, raising less than $50,000 from people other than himself with donations from just four Michiganders. Despite dumping his own fortune into the race, Junge’s finance report shows his campaign is lighting cash on fire and owes more than half a million in debts.

Not to be outdone, his competitor, Grosse Pointe out-of-towner Matt Seely, raised a nearly identical amount from donors and put almost half a million dollars of his own money into propping up his campaign.

“The chaotic MI-08 GOP primary spells nothing but bad news for Washington Republicans as the race is as wide open as ever and no one is earning the support of mid-Michiganders,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “With just weeks until the Michigan Republican primary, the clownshow primary field appears to be competing for the title of who can run the most incompetent campaign that will lose to Dan Kildee.”
