Today, in response to the Supreme Court’s demonstrated willingness to throw away precedent and Justice Clarence Thomas’ threat to overturn Americans’ right to marry whomever they love, the House passed the Respect for Marriage Act. This bill – now headed to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law – protects marriage equality and ensures legal same-sex and interracial marriages are recognized. Michelle Steel and Young Kim voted NO.
This isn’t the first time Steel and Kim voted against protecting individual liberties and preventing discrimination. In July, both Orange County Republicans voted against the Respect for Marriage Act. In February, Steel and Kim voted against the Equality Act, legislation that would ban discrimination against people based on sexual orientation.
DCCC spokesperson Maddy Mundy:
“Michelle Steel and Young Kim’s votes signal they want an individual’s right to marry who they love to be ripped away. Whether choosing not to protect abortion rights or same-sex and interracial marriage, Steel and Kim are showing Californians that they will not protect their rights.”
